What is goswami caste?

Goswami is a Hindu caste primarily found in the northern states of India such as Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh. They belong to the Brahmin varna (caste). The word "Goswami" literally means "lord of cows" and is derived from the words "go" meaning cow and "swami" meaning master or lord.

Traditionally, Goswamis were involved in the religious profession as priests, scholars, and teachers. They were responsible for conducting religious ceremonies and offering prayers in temples. Some of the well-known Goswami priests are associated with the Radha-Krishna tradition of Vaishnavism, such as the famous Six Goswamis of Vrindavan who were disciples of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Today, Goswami caste members are involved in various professions such as academics, politics, and business. They have also migrated to other parts of India and abroad.

It is important to note that the caste system in India has been abolished, but some social and economic discrimination based on caste still persists in some parts of the country.
